Unraveling Hidden Thoughts

Everything is unraveling. At least that’s how it seems. All of us caught in this recession that is really depression, bankrupting us financially, psychologically. We are all upended, our social order overturned, frayed.
With this work I peer into the unconscious, head inward for the hidden. These pieces, both literally and conceptually, are shredded, unraveling. In a palette reminiscent of old-world paintings, I present a cast of young women and children, birds and boxes. Obvious thought/hidden thought, something we all share. Our unconscious thoughts are the adversaries of our conscious thoughts. They are at war.
Using transparent writing and painting overlays I interpret this phenomenon. The two do their work invisibly until the viewer is drawn in close enough to discover the text. The invisible is visible. The communication is direct. It was there all along. Boxes and birds, meanwhile, are representations, our hidden thoughts.
These works are presented on wooden panels or canvas hangings inspired by ancient Japanese hangings. From 16-panel installations to large solitary works, I combine a unique mix of medias I developed in 2011. These pieces involve painting, and composed and altered photography with layers of transparent industrial polymer derivatives.
